Steamboat Springs School District 2017 Ballot Issues         3C & 3D Pros and Cons

ARGUMENTS FOR

  • A YES vote on 3C, an ongoing mill levy for the Steamboat Springs School District, in conjunction with the school bond measure on the ballot as 3D, address very pressing district facility needs and deferred maintenance issues in the near term and future.

  • The investments reflected in both 3C and 3D, align with four core values (safety, student success, transparency, and longevity) and would be challenging, if not impossible to fund without taxpayer support due to continually declining state funding.

  • The district has been a good steward of taxpayer monies and has stretched its continually shrinking state funds as far as it can to ensure all students are learning in a safe environment ready to succeed.  The Mills  applied to local taxpayers  for education are less than they were 11 years ago ( 25.554 Mills in 2006 and estimated to be 21.025 Mills with the two new measures)

ARGUMENTS AGAINST

  • With the passage of both 3C and 3D,  residential property owners will pay an estimated additional $3.25 per month/$39 per year for a $500,000 residential property; commercial property owners will pay an estimated additional $36 per month/$434 per year for a $500,000 commercial property.

  • Steamboat Springs School District should fund these projects by making cuts to its budget in other areas (e.g., cutting teaching and support positions, therefore increasing class size), reducing/freezing salary and benefits for educators and staff, reducing purchased instructional services, or reducing/eliminating programs.

  • Schools should be fully funded by the state, not by local property taxes.  The mills  applied to local taxpayers  for education is less than they were 11 years ago ( 25.554 Mills in 2006 & Estimated to be 21.025 with new measures)
