Steamboat Springs School District schools are currently at or beyond capacity. Our community is growing, as is the number of students in our schools. We need your input on how we should build for the future!

The Steamboat Springs School District used a survey to provide a volunteer opportunity for staff, parents and community members to be a part of a Design Advisory Group for a new PK-8 school. The survey closed November 15, 2019.

During its May 20, 2019 meeting, the Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education voted unanimously to narrow the type of new school facility to two options by eliminating the option to build an additional middle school. Additionally, the board will delay its decision on the type of new school facility the district will build until the next Board of Education meeting, on June 3, 2019. The decision to delay the new school facility vote was made so board members would have the opportunity to tour similar new school sites in area districts. The board believes school site tours will help provide a more complete understanding of the remaining two school facility options, so members can make an informed decision regarding the construction of a new school.

The two remaining school facility options are a new K-8 school and a K-4 replacement elementary school to replace Strawberry Park Elementary which would become part of the 5-8 middle school campus. School locations for the district’s pre-school program will be considered during the priority projects discussion at upcoming board meetings.

The Board of Education unanimously voted to select Steamboat II as the future location of a new school facility. Once the board makes a decision about the type of school that will be built, it will work with the neighborhood on the optimal placement of a facility on the district’s property.

Another outcome of the May 20 board meeting was the scheduling of a special meeting on June 5 to discuss topics and possibly take action related to a potential bond, including finalizing priority projects at the various school sites and the overall size of the bond. Additionally, the special meeting will include discussion related to potential mill levy overrides to address operational costs of a new school and staff compensation. The board’s goal is to have all decisions related to 2019 funding measures made by June 17.

The school board will continue conversations with possible action on the new school type, as well as discussion on priority projects for other district schools and mill levy override funding for operational costs and staff compensation, during its upcoming meeting on June 3. -Superintendent Brad Meeks

During the Board of Education meeting on June 17, 2019, the Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education gave direction to the district to move forward with a total bond package amount of $79.5 million. This includes a preliminary commitment to fund the following priority projects at the district’s existing schools in addition to the construction of a new Preschool–8 school at Steamboat II:

SSHS: 9,000 square foot addition (total capacity increase: +100-150)

SSMS: 4,000 square foot addition/renovation including science classroom and kitchen/dining space; turf and track (secondary practice field for high school sports)

SPE: Cafeteria addition; preschool

SCE: Additional classrooms to relocate students from 4 exterior modular trailer classrooms and house preschool

YVHS: Security vestibule; common space; bathroom improvements

NRCCS: Multi-purpose space and restroom addition

Other: Boys & Girls Club updates; renewable energy

The school board is continuing to evaluate potential mill levy override initiatives to fund teacher and staff compensation increases and the operation of a new school. The school board’s next workshop is Monday, July 22, 2019 at Bud Werner Memorial Library (1289 Lincoln Ave.) at 4pm.

During a special meeting on June 5, 2019 the Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education unanimously voted to include preschool at the district's new K-8 school. It also approved renovating space at Strawberry Park Elementary School and creating space at Soda Creek Elementary School to include one section of preschool at each school with the flexibility to add additional sections of preschool in the future. Preschool project costs are currently being recalculated by district consultants to align with the board's vote and will be presented to the board as part of the full cost of the bond package at the Board of Education meeting on June 17, 2019. The district and its consultants are prioritizing affordability and cost effectiveness in creating a potential 2019 bond package.

Tonight, November 19, 2018, the Steamboat Springs School District Board of Education unanimously voted to officially enter into a contract to purchase 35.91 acres of land adjacent to the Steamboat 2 , 35.15- acre property currently owned by the school district and designated as a future school site.
