Attracting and Retaining Exceptional Educators

Attracting and Retaining Exceptional Educators

The Steamboat Springs School District is proud to be a place where talented educators and staff choose to stay and grow. Over the past three years, our classroom teacher turnover rate has steadily declined.

  • 2022-2023: 21.7% teacher turnover

  • 2023–2024: 20.3% teacher turnover

  • 2024–2025: 12.56% teacher turnover

According to the Colorado Department of Education, Colorado’s average teacher turnover rate during the 2024–2025 school year was 16.98%. This means Steamboat Springs is retaining teachers at a higher rate than the state average. The steady decline reflects our commitment to putting teachers and staff first through competitive compensation, supportive working conditions, and long-term investment in people.

Over the past two years, SSSD has made significant investments to raise pay for all employees. In 2024–2025, the district approved a $3 million compensation package, increasing teacher salaries by 9–15% and classified staff wages by 9–18%, with a new base pay of $53,500 for teachers and $24/hour for classified staff. For 2025–2026, the district is continuing this momentum, providing average raises of 5% for certified staff and 8% for classified staff.

Through thoughtful planning, collaboration, and investment, SSSD has become a district that attracts and retains top educators—outpacing state averages and creating a stable, thriving environment for students and staff alike.
