BOE Approves of MOU Between SSSD and Rural Homes

Superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks provided an update on staff affordable housing at the September 8 Board of Education meeting. She presented a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Rural Homes, which the Board approved moving forward. This MOU outlines the framework for a potential housing project on district-owned land near Sleeping Giant School.

Key points from the MOU:

• MOU is non-binding, but provides a path forward for the affordable housing project.

• 22 total homes planned: mix of 2-, 3-, and 4-bedroom units.

• 10 homes purchased by SSSD for $5 million to be used as staff rentals.

• 12 homes sold by Rural Homes through a deed-restricted process, with preference for SSSD staff.

• All homes deed restricted: must remain affordable, owner-occupied, and limited to modest resale appreciation.

• Project is in early stages; infrastructure issues (water, sewer, etc.) must be resolved before a binding agreement.

• Rural Homes aims to begin construction in 2026 with move-ins by late 2027.
