Steamboat Springs High School Receives Toshiba America Foundation STEM Grant

Steamboat Springs, Colo. – Steamboat Springs High School (SSHS) has received a STEM grant from the Toshiba America Foundation (TAF) for $9,475 to support the expansion of hands-on engineering opportunities for students through the addition of advanced 3D scanning technology.

The grant will support the Engineering Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway at SSHS, where students design, fabricate, and test projects using SolidWorks, 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. The addition of a 3D scanner will allow students to capture precise dimensions of real-world objects, helping them analyze, redesign, prototype, and innovate with greater accuracy.

The new technology will introduce students to “reverse engineering” processes used in engineering and product design industries. Students will be able to scan existing objects, modify designs, and create prototypes through an iterative process that strengthens problem-solving, creativity, and technical skills.

“This technology gives students the opportunity to engage in authentic engineering experiences using the same types of tools and processes found in industry,” said Dan Brabec, Head of the Science and Engineering Departments at SSHS.

The project will also support collaboration with the school’s Natural Resources program and create opportunities for students to work on real-world design challenges connected to the local community.

“We are incredibly proud of the innovative opportunities our staff continues to create for students,” said Superintendent Dr. Celine Wicks. “This grant helps provide students with access to advanced tools that build critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and career-ready skills in meaningful and engaging ways.”

Toshiba America Foundation grants support innovative STEM projects designed by classroom teachers to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning more hands-on and engaging for students.
