The Steamboat Springs School District continues to strengthen special education services to ensure every student receives the individualized support they need to thrive. Over the past three years, SSSD has made significant improvements that are producing measurable results for students and staff alike.

Key enhancements include:
 

• Local leadership and autonomy: Transition to an Administrative Unit (AU), giving the district direct control over professional development, staffing, and service delivery.

• Comprehensive staff training: Annual Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification for designated staff—exceeding national standards—and targeted, year-round professional learning for paraprofessionals on safety, IEP implementation, and de-escalation.

• Expanded professional development: Access to Autism Curriculum Encyclopedia (ACE) curriculum training, video modules, and individualized coaching from district leaders.

• Competitive compensation: A 21% increase in starting wages for paraprofessionals since 2022–2023, from $21.61 to $26.11 per hour.
   

These investments are paying off. Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in SSSD are demonstrating faster academic growth than statewide trends.
 

• In Math, SSSD’s median growth percentile (MGP) rose from 40 to 47, compared to the state’s increase from 35 to 37.
   

• In English Language Arts, SSSD’s MGP grew from 43 to 54, outpacing the state’s increase from 38 to 40.
   

This accelerated growth helped SSSD earn the state’s highest rating—“Accredited with Distinction.” The district remains committed to continuous improvement and ensuring all students are supported, included, and positioned for success.
