Supporting Our Teachers: Affordable Housing Initiatives/Apoyando a Nuestros Maestros: Iniciativas de Vivienda Asequible

Dear Steamboat Springs School District Families,

Ahead of the Board of Education meeting on August 12, we want to provide key information about our efforts to address the critical issue of affordable housing for our teachers. Rising rents and housing prices make it increasingly difficult for our educators to live and work in the Yampa Valley, and we are committed to finding solutions.

In 2022, a survey revealed that 41.6% of our teachers considered leaving due to a lack of affordable housing. This pressing issue has been a priority in many Board of Education discussions over the past years. We are currently exploring various options for the land owned by the District at Whistler Park, including:

1. Developing the land to provide affordable housing while preserving part of the green space.

2. Conducting a "land swap" with the City to build housing at a different location.

3. Selling the land and using the proceeds to acquire housing elsewhere.

We have received a Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) grant to assist with this project and are collaborating with local partners to pursue a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The District acquired the Whistler Park land in 1980 and agreed in 1997 to use it as a park. We own nine acres of the park, with the City and water district owning the rest. We understand the importance of preserving open green space and will consider this in our plans.

Providing affordable housing for teachers is common in many Colorado resort communities, including Aspen, Eagle, the Roaring Fork Valley, and Telluride. It is vital for staying competitive, retaining top educators, and ensuring the best opportunities for our students.

Affordable housing for teachers benefits the entire community by reducing long commutes, enhancing work/life balance, and leading to better student outcomes and a stronger school culture. We must support our teachers to ensure they can live and work in the community they serve.

Antes de la reunión de la Junta de Educación el 12 de agosto, queremos proporcionar información clave sobre nuestros esfuerzos para abordar el tema crítico de la vivienda asequible para nuestros maestros. El aumento de los alquileres y los precios de la vivienda hacen que sea cada vez más difícil para nuestros educadores vivir y trabajar en Yampa Valley, y estamos comprometidos a encontrar soluciones.

En el año 2022, una encuesta reveló que el 41.6% de nuestros maestros consideraron dejar su puesto debido a la falta de vivienda asequible. Este problema ha sido una prioridad en muchas discusiones de la Junta de Educación en los últimos años. Actualmente, estamos explorando varias opciones para el terreno, propiedad del Distrito en Whistler Park, incluyendo:

1. Desarrollar el terreno para proporcionar vivienda asequible mientras preservamos parte del espacio verde.

2. Realizar un "Intercambio de terrenos" con la ciudad para construir viviendas en una ubicación diferente. 

3. Vender el terreno y usar los ingresos para adquirir viviendas en otro lugar. 

Hemos recibido una subvención de parte del Departamento de Asuntos Locales (DOLA por sus siglas en inglés) para asistir con este proyecto  y estamos colaborando con socios locales para obtener un Memorándum de entendimiento (MOU).

El Distrito adquirió el terreno de Whistler Park en 1980 y acordó en 1997 usarlo como un parque. Somos propietarios de nueve acres del parque, en conjunto con la Ciudad y el Distrito de Agua, quienes poseen el resto. Entendemos la importancia de preservar el espacio verde abierto y consideraremos esto en nuestros planes.

Proveer viviendas asequibles para los maestros es común en muchas comunidades de resorts en Colorado, incluyendo Aspen, Eagle, Roaring Fork Valley y Telluride. Es vital mantenernos competitivos, retener a los mejores educadores y asegurar las mejores oportunidades para nuestros estudiantes.

Las viviendas asequibles para los maestros benefician a toda la comunidad, reduciendo los largos trayectos, mejorando el equilibrio entre el trabajo y la vida personal, generando mejores resultados estudiantiles y una cultura escolar más fuerte. Debemos apoyar a nuestros maestros para asegurar que puedan vivir y trabajar en la comunidad a la que sirven,
